Surf and Turf

Imagine beginning your trip experiencing colorful parrot fish, groupers, sea turtles, eagle rays, and much more in the underwater world of Scuba diving. Just 30 miles off mainland Honduras lies the Bay Island of Roatan. You'll be just a few yards away from the second largest barrier reef in the world. Our SCUBA instructors are certified through PADI (a world recognized certification) and they will take you through the four day course for your certification. Not one minute is spent in the pool. From the moment your course begins, you'll be swimming among the fish. After the course, we'll set off for a Fun Dive exploring popular dive spots throughout the West End Marine Reserve. Those already certified will have the opportunity to further their certification through an Advanced PADI course or just Fun Dives the whole week with Sueno Del Mar Dive Shop.

One day on the island we'll stop in to the Institute of Marine Sciences for the Dolphin Encounter. Here, Cetacean Specialists will introduce you to these intelligent beings. These very playful mammals will amaze you as you swim among them.

The trip switches gears as we head to the mainland for the week of rivers portion. After breakfast we will take a hike in the Pico Bonito National Park near the Lodge at Pico Bonito. Here we will visit birding towers along a scenic nature trail.

Everyone will have the opportunity to shake off the winter cobwebs with a day of paddling on the Rio Cangrejal. The Cangrejal acts as the eastern buffer zone for the Pico Bonito National Park, extending the habitat for many protected animals such as the toucan, motmot, jaguar, and many other rainforest creatures. After a day of warming up locally we'll set out for the four-day expedition on the Rio Sico. We'll spend our days floating down the 38 mile stretch of river located along the western flank of La Mosquitia Jungle. Here you'll encounter the beautiful backdrop of rolling hills and wild orchids on overhanging fig trees along the river corridor. As we make our way down the river we'll pass Pech Indian villages which are only accessible by foot and horse trail.
After this excursion you'll have experienced some of the best sites and adventures Honduras has to offer.

Caribbean Safari

This trip is a sampler of what the Surf and Turf has to offer. We begin the trip with what we call a Resort Course, otherwise known as a SCUBA Sampler. In the morning our PADI Instructor will guide you through the basics of SCUBA diving. Afterward, everyone will have the opportunity to participate in the Fun Dive excursion to a local site. You will see first hand what a unique world lies beneath the sea.

Mayan Safari

The original Banana Republic, Honduras, is mostly due to the large banana plantations of Standard Fruit Company and DOLE Fruit. The history of Honduras actually goes back much farther then that. First inhabitants date back as far as 1200 BC. The Olmec Civilization lived within the region from around 900 to 600 BC. More recently was the Mayan civilization, which began around 250 AD. Copan Ruins host some of the most artistic sculptures from throughout Central America to have ever existed in the Mayan Dynasty.

We'll begin with a memorable tour through the Mayan ruins of Copan. The backdrop of Copan's mountainous terrain will take your breath away as you slip back through time to an ancient civilization. You will walk through open markets with fresh fruits and vegetables along the cobblestone streets. You will have the opportunity to visit little artesian shops selling local crafts and sculptures. After exploring the ruins we'll make our way to La Ceiba and begin the river segment of the journey.

Sico Excursion

The Rio Sico lies about 6 hours due east of La Ceiba in the department of Olancho. The river meanders northerly along the western flank of the Mosquitia Jungle. The mouth of the river was depicted in Paul Theroux's novel The Mosquito Coast (movie starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren). The put-in for this section is located upstream in the mountainous area near the small town of San Esteban, and flows 38 miles north to the take-out near La Bolsa.

We'll spend our days floating through the canyons and valleys. Here you'll encounter the beautiful backdrop of the Sierra de Agalta National Park where wild lavender and white orchids are found high up in the trees. Here the birding can be outstanding with trogans, quetzals, toucans, Black Hawks, and much, much more.

The river passes through narrow canyons such as Orchid Chasm and Cayman Canyon. Over 60 class II-III rapids keep things alive throughout the journey. As we make our way down the river we'll pass four Pech Indian villages which are only accessible by foot and horse trail. Curious and playful children will run down to greet. Each night we'll camp along the river's edge where our staff will prepare delicious meals such as filet mignon, enchilada bakes and of course dutch-oven cooked cakes. This truly is a spectacular and relaxing place to spend four wonderful days out in the backcountry.

Clinica del Rio

Honduras is known for its steep gradient, and there's no better place to work on those skills. This is an ideal course for paddlers wanting to learn advanced techniques for running rivers and creeks. Most of our time will be spent on the Rio Cangrejal, the river featured in the film, "Essential Boat Control," with Ken Whiting. The Cangrejal offers a wide variety of paddling challenges. Each rapid can present steep and technical drops with maneuvers which require split second timing.

Each day we'll run different sections of the Cangrejal working on the mechanics to make you a stronger, more confident paddler. Just a few skills we'll focus on will be: boofing, boat edging, stroke techniques (cruising vs. accelerating), scouting (riverside and boat), and safety procedures. We video tape each participant demonstrating each skill and review it together later. These videos also make for a great souvenir! We design our trips for small groups of paddlers. This way more attention will be given to each participant. During the clinic we'll be up on the Cangrejal staying at our exclusive River House deep in the jungle.
